Tips on Hard Disk Compatibility and installation
The Hard drive you purchased is meeting the IDE 2.5 inch standards for
laptops.
Remember you are purchasing a blank Hard disk
- make sure you are backing up your data and you have a way to boot and
install software.
- Some computer manufacturers place the HDD in a HDD case, specific to a
laptop, or a series of laptops.
- You are purchasing from us a bare (blank) drive that might need to be
installed in the case your laptop uses.
- The case is slightly bigger than the HDD and you should be able to see the
four screws on the outside attaching the HDD and two screws holding the
connector.
- Make sure you notice the way the old HDD was plugged and plug it the same
way. There is one missing pin in the middle on the bottom row for
reference.
- Here is an example:

- Next problem you might encounter is that the screw hole might not align
with the spots on the HDD.
- This is because the manufactures changed the HDD Standards on screw
distances.
- Don’t be alarmed the HDD won't go anywhere and will work fine without
the screws attached.
- All the new, large capacity HDD's are like that so there is nothing you
can do.
- You might also find that the new HDD is slimmer than your old one.
- That is okay, they are compatible.
- After physical installation make sure that the computer recognizes the new
HDD in the BIOS, this is easy since the most of Pentium Class Laptops, will
auto detect it.
- Some manufacturers have BIOS upgrades you can get at their websites, we
recommend doing that.
- You will need to boot from a floppy drive and have a System disk for
that.
- (A System disk is made in WIN95/8 by going in the Control Panel and
selecting "Add/Remove programs, and then select "Start-up
disk" on the top.)
- After booting from the floppy the first thing to do is partition the new
HDD.
- At the A:\ prompt type " fdisk" and hit enter.
- This option will allow you to split the HDD in several logical drives and
assign them letters.
- The last step before loading your operating system will be to format the
new HDD, the same way, by executing "format C:" at the A: \
prompt.
- Loading Windows 95/8 can by done by floppy or trough an CD ROM.
- That will require software drivers for your particular laptop.
- We can not help you with that, but many brands will have those for
download on their site.
- If it seems too much we suggest you book the laptop in for us to install
the software, cost £75.00+vat
- You might also have a "Restore CD ROM" that you should have
received with your computer.
- That will restore factory software and will save you all the steps above.
